The goal of Sseko Designs fair trade footwear is two-fold: to provide adequate tuition for the promising young women of Uganda through sustainable fair trade wages, while also contributing to the overall economic development of the country as a whole. Sseko Designs (pronounced Say-Ko) hires recent secondary school graduates during the gap between secondary school and university to help create and craft unique fair trade footwear. During this time they’ll earn the money needed to pursue their university education.
The Sseko Designs fair trade footwear line includes a variety of fashionable, handcrafted sandals. The materials used to make the sandals’ ties come in a number of fabrics, colors and designs, from simple blacks and browns to dazzling metallic copper, gold and silver to eye-popping reds and neons. There is even a line of fabulously fair trade unique wedding sandals to make your big day even more special. For those looking to do even more, there is also an option to host a Sseko party in your own home, where you and your friends can enjoy one another’s company while picking out some rocking fair trade sandals – all while having a positive impact on someone else’s life and future.
The ultimate goal behind Sseko Designs is not for the women they employ to make fair trade footwear forever, but rather to provide them with the opportunity to receive the education they need to eventually become doctors, lawyers, politicians, writers and teachers that will bring change to their communities and their country. Sseko Designs believes that “every sandal has a story. This story has only just begun, but with your help, it will be a story of hope, success and change.”
