The Leakey Collection was born out of a need. A devastating drought in Kenya in 2001 forced the men to leave behind the women and children, so they could take the surviving cattle far up country in search of grazing land. As a result, the Leakey’s found themselves supporting as many as 100 Maasai families which was not sustainable for either party and the Leakeys knew they had to find another way. The result was the creation of beautiful fair trade jewelry designed, hand crafted and marketed as The Leakey Collection.
Available for purchase online as well as through over 1200 retail outlets, the Leakey Collection’s Zulugrass jewelry provides beautiful, handmade fair trade jewelry and accessories to brighten a woman’s look and offers a sustainable way of life for the nomadic people of Kenya. Not only are the Massai women paid a fair wage for their work, but an additional 5% of the profits go back to supporting infrastructure in the Rift Valley of Kenya. In addition to the Zulugrass line, there are also a variety of other colorful styles and designs from wood to porcelain as well as household accessories and beautiful fair trade gifts to choose from.
Perhaps what makes the Leakey Collection’s fair trade jewelry so beautiful is not the vibrant colors or unique designs, but the fact that it exhibits the incredible talent and grace of the wonderful Maasai women who create it with their own hands. What was once born out of a glaring need and sense of hopelessness has now become a successful business and philanthropic endeavor for the Leakeys and the Massai people.
